LRQA certified one of Hong Kong’s largest container-terminal operators, Modern Terminals Limited , to ISO 14001 in December 2009.

While there was no external pressure for the company to gain ISO14001 certification Modern Terminals remains committed to being a responsible corporate citizen. Its management team wanted a programme which would support their long-term commitment to reducing environmental risks on the waterfront in Hong Kong, where most of their operations take place.

There was a strong buy-in to the programme from the staff so it took less than a year for Modern Terminals to implement the international environmental-management systems standard. To ensure successful deployment, Modern Terminals also arranged courses on environmental management for its 1,200+ work force.

After certification, Modern Terminals said they had a more robust management system to address risks such as chemical spills, having properly separated chemical waste and put in place a disposal regime (see attached image).

During the certificate ceremony, Modern Terminals management told Richard Gunawan, LRQA’s Vice President for Business and Sustainability Development, Asia, that their operations have reduced fuel consumption by 40% by retrofitting 44 traditional diesel-powered  Rubber-tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) to hybrid-RTGs in Hong Kong facilities.  In China, the company’s subsidiary Da Chan Bay Terminal One in Shenzhen is the first container terminal in the world that deploys a complete fleet of environmentally friendly electricity-powered RTGs (E-RTGs), thus reducing 99% direct CO2 emission.  Taicang International Gateway, its subsidiary in Suzhou, has also converted most of the RTGs into E-RTGs.

Modern Terminals chose Lloyd’s Register and LRQA due its long standing relationship and reputation in the marine industry.
