Food management system is essential to protect the brands
Why did Silver Bird Group choose LRQA to certify ISO 22000

How can a bakery ensure daily consistency of 500,000 rolls, breads, buns and sandwiches? It’s a big responsibility to ensure products meet quality guidelines, and it’s not an easy process.
The Silver Bird Group is one of the largest bakeries in Malaysia; it owns the well-known ‘High 5’ sandwich bread. According to Dato’ Jackson Tan, Group Managing Director of Silverbird, because customer satisfaction is critical to his company’s success, food safety can never be compromised.
To manage a complex manufacturing facility, Mr Ong Choon Wah, the General Manager of Silver Bird’s manufacturing division, chose ISO 22000, an international food safety management standard a the platform for its manufacturing activity.
It takes many years of hard work to build a strong brand, which can be destroyed by one food-safety incident. So, to start, the company felt the need to raise the bar for acceptable quality levels.
Why did Silver Bird Group choose LRQA to certify ISO 22000?
The Silver Bird Group’s management says they do not attach any value to ‘easy going’ audits. To identify critical points, improve controls and prevent food-safety incidents, they want assessors who are thorough and disciplined. LRQA assessors came with the right qualifications and the requisite levels of experience in the food industry. They challenged the existing management system and gave fresh perspectives to the Silver Bird management team.
What are the positive outcomes of certification?
Silver Bird now has far more confidence in and understanding of its operations. It has a systematic documentation process. Employees understand their job scope and they seem to work better as a team to achieve a common goal.
